Travis Mills Wins Season Opener @ Avalon

After a chaotic few days preparing for the season opener, Mills Motorsport Group pulled it all together when it counted and seized the opening Victorian round for the second season in a row.

Beginning the night with a touching moment to the Mills and Pearce families along with the VSDA and their long association with Avalon Raceway; the father and son duo of Travis and Caleb were asked to salute the crowd and fly the Australian flags for the event opening national anthem lap. A very proud moment for so many people.

Once formalities were out of the way it was time for Avalon Raceway’s annual Hellonwheels Halloween event to rev up. With over 100 cars over four divisions in attendance it was always going to be a fast night to fit everything in before curfew.

Showcasing their signature branding, Mills was easy to spot as he quickly moved from starting grid p7 to finish 3rd in heat one within the 8 laps allocated and did much the same for heat 2. Starting from p4 and finishing 2nd, Squizzy quite simply ran out of laps to do much more in both instances.

The heat placings resulted in Mills qualifying to start from p2 for the 20 lap Amain. After a couple of restarts due to some collisions back in the field, Squizzy made his move on the opening lap and never looked back.

Showing his class on the hooky Avalon clay, Squizzy put the car on the high line and drove with precision and finesse.

Unfortunately a number of cautions and eventually a complete race stoppage left the race directors no option but to declare the race after only seven laps being completed due to time constraints. However a win is a win they say!

Mills Motorsport Group rushed into round one however upon reflection the longer than normal wait for the engine rebuild appears to be worth it; ‘The team at GRD wanted to make a few changes to the engine this year and we’re glad we agreed. The engine is great! I’m extremely pleased with its performance on the weekend and I can’t wait to see what else I can do with it.

Given what I’ve experienced already I would have happily waited another week for it!’ Squizzy explained.

Mills Motorsport Group is next headed to Ballarat’s Redline Raceway for the inaugural running of the Bill Evans Classic.
