Two Outta Three ain't too Shabby

Over an eight day period earlier this month Mills Motorsport took on the South Australian, Victorian and Tasmanian Championships an ultimately walked away with two of the three state titles.

Heading into the championship chase with good form the team were confident everything was on their side for some positive results.

The 69th South Australian Championship was first on the cards and and driver Travis Mills did not disappoint amongst the stiff competition. The original car count was revised to 23 after some late withdrawals, nevertheless it was 23 of the finest and managing a podium placing let alone a win was going to be tough.

Borderline Speedway Mt Gambier provided all the right conditions for some excellent speedcar racing. After two rounds of qualifying heats Squizzy would start the 30 lap championship race from p3. Squizzy would run most of the race in 2nd place behind the 6s of Harley Bishop until NSW's Matt Jackson driving the Moose Motorsport 23v appeared after starting from p9! After Jackson took the lead Mills fought back and finished in 2nd place. Relive the action here; thanks to Dream Multimedia.

After a days reprieve the teams converged on Warrnambool's Premier Speedway for the 74th running of the Victorian Speedcar Championship. Contesting as the defending champion Mills was eager to retain his title and snatch his 3rd.

A total of 26 cars were in attendance including youngster Caleb Mills competing in his very first Victorian Championship alongside his father and uncle and in the footsteps of both his grandfathers.

Following the qualifying heats Squizzy would again put himself on the second row for the championship race. Initially fighting for second place with NSW’s Nathan Smee until Smee suffered a driveline failure and caused the race to be halted. Upon the restart Mills would line up behind NSW’s Braydan Wilmington but unfortunately for Wilmington he hit the cone on the single file restart and was relegated 2 positions. Mills would inherit the lead and run away with the lead claiming his third Victorian Championship. Relive the action here; thanks to Dream Multimedia.

Youngster Caleb progressed well but unfortunately would qualify one position outside the maximum Amain car field of 24 cars. As first reserve he suited up in the hope that a first lap indiscretion would occur allowing him to take the field but it was not to be. Instead he watched the momentous occasion from the infield and was the first to greet his dad with a hug of congratulations.

Trekking back to HQ the following day there was no time for rest, the team were booked to board the Spirit of Tasmania headed for their first Tasmania Championship, disappointingly Mills Motorsport were the only mainland team to venture across but this did not dissipate their excitement to field only the third running of the event and experience a new track.

Despite never seen let alone raced at Cranes Combined Carrick Speedway, Squizzy took like a duck to water setting the fastest lap time during hot laps and winning both heats. Starting the 25 from pole position it took him a couple of laps to take control but from that point he led from lap 6 until the chequered flag dropped.

Crowned Champion for two of the three state championships took its toll on equipment and supplies, not to mention the physical toll on the team. They have laid low and replenished their supplies and completed all the required maintenance in preparation for the G Town Rumble this coming weekend. That was until notification early this week that Speedcars along with Dirt Modifieds had been dropped from the program due to larger than expected nominations for the Victorian Wingless Championship.

Another week of rest won’t do anyone any harm and has also provided a buffer before the team head west for some more championship action.

Mills Motorsport Group would like to take this opportunity to thank and acknowledge the assistance that Dutton Garage have provided with our travel arrangements. The logistics in transporting our race operation has been tricky to negotiate not to mention the expense involved. Quite simply if they hadn’t offered we wouldn’t have ventured to Tasmania and it’s unlikely we would be scheduled to attend this season’s Australian Championship - so the team at Dutton Garage, THANK-YOU. Let’s hope we can bring home a couple more trophies.
